Who we are
Universitas Press is a Montreal-based independent academic press, peer-reviewed, founded in 2014. Committed to publishing relevant work of academics and independent researchers in the field of humanities and social sciences, as well as to publishing books for the classroom, UP is dedicated to bringing students, instructors and researchers the best editorial and academic output. With books addressing well-identified readers, the press’s main aim is to publish books that make sense of the world.
In all disciplines, thematic volumes and monographs aim at introducing new concepts and trends that challenge pre-conceived and outdated narratives. In the literary field, editions of classics, either student editions, scholarly or critical editions, and anthologies cater to today’s students by presenting material in an engaging, politically correct and culturally sensitive way.
Our CLASSICS boast a most reliable text and a scholarly introduction that reflects the latest interpretations of each of the novels, written with an undergraduate audience in mind. Our CRITICAL EDITIONS bring new approaches to classics and further the scholarship. Our ANTHOLOGIES aim to encourage students and to guide them through the material with their selection of texts, a chronological order, and a scholarly introduction and calendar.
As of now, UP is open to submissions for books, essay collections (based on calls for papers), critical editions, classics, and course-based anthologies. We strongly encourage young scholars and researchers who share our vision of books that make sense of the world, to contact us. We welcome studies from all countries, as we believe that non-Anglophone researchers are underrepresented in the English-speaking world. Please check our guidelines for submissions.
UP titles are available worldwide through Ingram. They can be ordered through amazon and many other booksellers of note, among them Indigo, Barnes & Nobles, Foyles, AbeBooks, and many other.
Canadian distribution is solely through UBC Press (see below):
August 1st 2018: UBC Press is now the exclusive Canadian distributor for all the titles published by Montreal-based publisher Universitas Press. The partnership between UBC Press and Universitas Press has at its core the promotion of Canadian academic publishing excellence and bringing to individuals, scholars, libraries, and retailers the quality books published by local, independent academic publishers.
Founded four years ago to-date, Universitas Press is a vibrant, innovative publisher focused on teaching and research, and specializing in humanities and social sciences. An independent company, Universitas Press publishes peer-reviewed books that serve an identified readership (AP English, junior college, 1st-year university, and advanced and graduate literature students). The press produces student editions, scholarly and critical editions of timeless classics, and anthologies of poetry and fiction. The accompanying critical apparatus takes into consideration both the students’ and the instructors’ needs, facilitating a more effective engagement with the texts with the ultimate goal of contributing to a stimulating exchange between the student (the reader), the text, and the instructor.
Universitas Press also publishes peer-reviewed research as monographs, thematic volumes, and collections of essays. Best explained by the press’s slogan “Books that make sense of the world,” these titles bring to the fore contemporary trends and topics ranging from editorial theory to media and entertainment studies.
Commenting on the new distribution arrangement, Universitas editor-in-chief, Dr. Cristina Artenie, says “We are very excited about this partnership and are looking forward to working with the UBC Press team. Our books are in good hands.” Melissa Pitts, director of UBC Press, is equally pleased, stating “We are delighted to be working with Universitas Press, a passionately engaged and visionary publisher. We expect a strong response to their books and editorial acumen. Great things will follow.”
UBC Press is Canada’s leading social sciences publisher. Established in 1971, the Press publishes sophisticated and transformative works by authors whose thought and research pushes the boundaries of scholarly discourse and makes a vital contribution to the democratic exchange of ideas. UBC Press is also the distributor for several fine Canadian and foreign publishers, bringing a diversity of scholarship and books for general readers to Canadian audiences.
